TRAINING FOR TODAY'S TECHNOLOGY

Attracting and training a skilled and motivated workforce is crucial to any new or expanding company.  No state has more experience helping companies with these important issues than North Carolina.  The state pioneered free, customized job training for new and expanding businesses in 1958 and continues to provide the nation's most recognized customized job training.  Helping businesses maintain their competitive edge is primary role of the North Carolina Community Colleges and their Customized Training and Development services. This specialized workforce training program has helped build success for companies that now call North Carolina home, and contribute to the multiple rankings that list North Carolina's businesses climate as one of the best in the nation.

Eligibility for new and expanding industry training services is determined on a company-by-company basis.  However, criteria for obtaining services is anything but complex.  Typically, the services provided are based on the number of new jobs created, their skill and wage levels, and the level of total capital investment.  Services are made available to companies that create 12 or more new jobs in any one community in North Carolina during a one-year period.

Companies that have taken advantage of program services are diverse - from auto parts and electronics manufacturers to bio-technology companies and data processing centers. Training services provided to these companies may include instructors and training program development, customized video training programs, temporary training facilities, equipment, and supplies.

The McDowell Technical Community College has provided customized training to companies in the area, meeting the most diverse training needs.  Because no two companies are the same, there is no "cookie cutter" approach to training programs.  Companies benefit from tailor made programs that support their specific needs for a skilled and knowledgeable force, today and in the future.

QUALIFIED INSTRUCTION AND TRAINING

A network of skilled professionals provides industry-based experience in a variety of technologies and disciplines.  Whether it's CNC programming, leadership training or QS 9000, qualified instructors are ready to assist in implementing the company's job training specifications.

The program makes instructors available at no expense to eligible new and expanding companies.  However, sometimes the best instructor for a particular training course may be a company employee.  This is frequently the case with certain high-tech or proprietary technology.  In this instance, the program can offset the costs of instructor wages, "train the trainer" expenses, and travel costs of a negotiated number of company employees that provide start-up training to newly-employed North Carolinians.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

If a company is not equipped to handle training on-site, employers may utilize facilities at McDowell Technical Community College at no expense.  In fact, the program can absorb the costs of locally transporting training equipment to and from the community college training facility.  Companies also have access to one of the most advanced fiber-optic based distance learning systems.  Through the "North Carolina Information Highway," companies can take advantage of real-time, interactive training opportunities in community colleges across the state.

SUPPLIES AND CUSTOMIZED MATERIALS

Support to new and expanding companies includes the costs of training supplies and materials necessary to carry our effective instruction.  In addition, depending on the size and scope of a particular training project, the program will develop customized training materials that may include: orientation and work process videos; computer based training; and customized training manuals.  North Carolina's customized video programs have received both regional and national awards.

OUR CONTINUED SUPPORT

While start-up training assistance is significant, ongoing training support in North Carolina is truly unique.  Once a business or manufacturing site is operational, the community college continues to serve as a training partner.  McDowell Technical Community College offers state-subsidized, low-cost training in more than 1,200 categories, available at the community college or the company's work site.  This training is offered through the

Focused Industrial Training Program (FIT).
